The beds at the Harrington are super comfy and it is about as quiet as downtown Kolkata gets. The building opposite is the US Consulate and traffic past it is severely restricted. The noises we do hear are the brain fever bird in the tree outside and the staff making conversation in the dining room. We are well rested and ready for breakfast which is cooked to order in the open kitchen at the end of the room. It starts with fresh fruit and we are asked for our cooked preferences. Masala omelette seule for R and with bacon for D. The waiter brings a dish to the table and announces it as bacon. D's pet breakfast hate is tepid baked beans. When his omelette arrives it is accompanied by rather good bacon so he is mollified somewhat. Also delivered are toast, pancakes with honey and slices of fruit cake. We aren't quite that hungry. Preface - Lingua Franca

It is nearly Radinja time again. Having learned our lesson last year the world of organised tours has been shunned and we will be paddling our own canoe*.  We will be deviating slightly from our normal method by spending the first two weeks in Bangladesh before returning to India. There should be the usual mixture of food, trains, bird watching and more food. We hope to meet up with one or two friends and have a few laughs on the way. Lonely Planet's rather slim Bangladesh volume suggests that not much English is spoken although we have heard contrary opinions. D has picked up a few phrases in Bangla over the years, from a variety of dubious sources, but they are mostly inappropriate for polite conversation. There must be a limit to what can be achieved with " eesh ".  Just to be on the safe side we have invested in a Phrase Book. Thursday 28th February - Dutch Treat

We sleep extremely well and have to scramble to get to the eight o'clock breakfast that we asked for. The Kerala menu was our chosen option and we have no regrets when it arrives. Pineapple lassi, followed by puttu topped with coconut, served with black chickpea kari, sliced banana and things that look and taste like crisps. You can keep your avocado toast and hash browns. The concept of black tea, no sugar has arrived here so all is good. Our plan today is to hit the less touristy areas to get one or two things for home. D does some research and finds a place a mile or so away that has a few shops that might fit the bill. As we exit, yesterday's auto driver is waiting. He quotes a reasonable fare to where we want to go and, once we are underway, asks why we want to go there. When we say 'Kitchenware' he tells us that he knows some good places.
